Suffering in The Vienna Maternity Ward

In the 1840s in Vienna, a famous teaching hospital called Allegemeine Krakenhaus had some very odd procedures for pregnant women.  In the maternity wards of this celebrated hospital, one out of every six woman died. This crazy mortality rate was similar with other hospitals around the world. The medical doctors, delivering babies, said, the deaths were due to constipation, delays, lactation, excessive, fear, and poisonous air. Upon further study of their procedures in this prestigious hospital, evolved a very dangerous procedure . Each morning, as their first order of medical business, the physicians and medical students entered the hospital morgue to perform autopsies on the unfortunate victims, who would die during the preceding 24 hours, unbelievably without washing their hands, the attending doctors and medical students marched into the maternity ward to perform pelvic examinations on the living, pregnant women. Of course, no rubber gloves were worn!
Finally, at one point, a young doctor named Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis was giving charge over this obstetrical ward. He observed that those women who were examined, became sick, and died much more often than the women who were not examined. After observing this for three years, he established a new rule for this ward he ordered every physician and medical student who had participated in autopsies of the dead to carefully wash their hands before examining living pregnant women.
Well, you can guess the results. The research showed the astonishing statistics that women were no longer dying . In fact, with the advent of washing hands, they were astonishing survival statistics, which strongly indicated that fatal infections have been carried from the corpses to living pregnant young women.
Please remember, although this medical procedure of not wearing protective gloves was considered totally OK for hundreds of years, can we even phantom what well-meaning medical doctors do these days which they believe are extremely healthy and important. But then we find out 10 years later the invasive surgical procedures, and the intense pharmaceutical drugs, actually caused the disease and was not the cure.
