As kids head back to school, one thing they'll carry every single day is their backpack—and often, it's heavier than it should be. While it may seem harmless, an overloaded or improperly worn backpack can put unnecessary stress on a child’s growing spine and lead to poor posture, back pain, and even long-term issues.
At Bellomo Family Chiropractic, we care about your child’s spinal health as much as you do. Here’s what every parent should know about backpack safety—plus our top tips to help your child stay strong, aligned, and pain-free this school year.
Children are still developing physically, and their spines are particularly vulnerable to repeated stress. When a backpack is too heavy or worn incorrectly:
It causes the spine to lean forward unnaturally
It leads to muscle strain, especially in the neck, shoulders, and lower back
It may cause headaches, tingling in the arms, or fatigue
It contributes to poor posture habits that persist into adulthood
To reduce risk and protect your child’s back, follow these simple guidelines:
Choose the Right Backpack
Look for wide, padded shoulder straps and a padded back
Multiple compartments help distribute weight evenly
Waist and chest straps can help stabilize the load
Check the Weight
A loaded backpack should weigh no more than 10–15% of your child’s body weight
Weigh it occasionally—you might be surprised how much is inside!
Wear It Properly
Use both shoulder straps
Adjust straps so the pack sits high on the back—not sagging low
Encourage kids to use lockers and avoid carrying all books at once
Lift with the Legs, Not the Back
Teach kids to bend at the knees when picking up their backpacks
If your child complains of back pain, shoulder discomfort, or headaches—or you notice them slouching or leaning to one side while wearing their backpack—it’s time to take a closer look. Don’t ignore these red flags!
At Bellomo Family Chiropractic, we offer gentle pediatric spinal assessments to ensure your child’s spine is healthy and developing correctly. A simple checkup can make a big difference—especially at the start of a busy school year.
To support families this season, we’re offering a free spinal checkup for kids with any scheduled parent adjustment in August and September. Call us at 407-295-1077 or book online at OrlandoBChHealth.com.
