Does Disease and Pain Lead to Lament—or to Hope?
When faced with pain and suffering, it’s natural to wonder: Do these hardships lead us to lament?
To explore this, let’s first define lament. In biblical terms, lament is a prayer born out of pain that ultimately leads to hope in God. It’s more than just expressing sorrow—it’s about honestly bringing our grief before the Lord and choosing to trust Him through it.
Difficult times—like a child being diagnosed with leukemia or a husband suffering a heart attack—can shake our foundations. Crises often reorient our hearts toward what truly matters. But for that transformation to take root, we must turn to God and seek Him in prayer.
Personally, I often find myself at a crossroads during such moments—what feels like a divinely orchestrated intersection. One path calls for deeper trust, growth, and transformation. The other tempts me toward comfort, complacency, and self-protection. My instinct is to ask, “Why am I in this crisis?” But a better question might be: “What am I meant to learn? How can I grow in this pivotal season?”
I firmly believe prayer is the key to finding comfort and peace amid stress. The Apostle Paul offers us this timeless reminder in Philippians 4:6–7:
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
May you find comfort, courage, and clarity today—wherever you are on your journey.
