HOW BONES GAIN-AND LOSE-MASS

Bones, many people think, are solid and unchanging , comparable to the inner structure of a building. Nothing could be further from the truth. Hard like ivory on the surface, but spongy and pliable inside. Bone is about 50% water. Bone has two main functions: first, to act as a support system, rigid enough to withstand strong forces and flexible enough to permit movement; and second, to store calcium. Bone consists of two kinds of cells: one builds tissue and lays down calcium and other minerals, which it derives from the bloodstream; the other type removes calcium and releases it , so that it can be used futher in essential bodily functions.

Some people with asthma and rheumatoid arthritis take cortisons for long periods which can deminish bone strength. So can long-term use of thyroid hormones which sometimes use to treat obesity.
